Many teenagers dream of having a baby. They see someone with a new baby and they wish it were
them.
However, if you have a teen that's thinking of having a baby, you need to explain to them that
parenting is a lifelong commitment.
You don't just have a baby and then that's it.
You have to feed that baby, you have to support that baby and you have to be ready to provide
everything that baby needs.
So if your teen doesn’t have a job, or has only a minimum wage job, you have to explain to them
that they're not ready to have a baby. It all comes down to: if you can't take care of yourself, how can you begin
to take care of a child?
Parenting - A Good Job
When you explain that parenting is a lifelong commitment to your teen, ask them how they're
going to support their baby. Do they have a good job? Do they make enough money? Things like clothing and baby
formula get very expensive before too long.
If your teen says that they'll get government help, that's the wrong answer. Explain to them
that they need to be able to support themselves. They need to learn life's lessons before they begin to teach them
to a new baby. So make sure your teen has a good job and makes good money, enough to support themselves and their
new baby.
Parenting Skills
When you explain that parenting is a lifelong commitment, ask them if they know how to take care
of a baby. Do they know that they won't be able to go out with their friends because they'll have to stay home to
raise, feed and change their baby?
Do they know that they may have to wake up several times during the night to feed their baby?
These are things that teenagers may not think about when they consider having children. They don't realize that
when they hear that parenting is a lifelong commitment that really means their entire lives are going to
change.
Parenting - Life Changing
Parenting is a lifelong commitment, which means that their going to have to refocus their lives.
They might have to put their hopes and dreams aside so that they can take care of their new child to give it
exactly what it needs to survive and grow.
If your teen doesn't have that kind of focus, then parenting is not for them. However, if your
teen has a good job, can dedicate their life to the new child and is ready to give the child everything it needs,
including unlimited love and attention, then maybe, just maybe, your teen is ready to have a child. Just make sure
they are completely ready because parenting isn't something you can take back.
