Raising a child is not easy even when you are the birth parent. There is no fixed way of raising children correctly because each child is an individual and what is effective for one might not work for the next.

Administering discipline where appropriate is perhaps the most challenging aspect of raising a child and if it is not done correctly the parents and child will face major problems.

It is particularly hard to discipline an adopted child, especially if they know that you are not the birth parent.

I Don’t Have The Right

In many cases people who adopt a child do so because they are unable to have children of their own. Because such individuals have been longing to have a child they often have unrealistic and idealistic notions about parenthood.

It can come as quite a shock when the child they adopt turns out to be as imperfect as every other human being on the planet. What’s more, many parents are unwilling to discipline an adopted child. They feel as though they do not have the right to discipline an adopted child because they are not the birth parents.

The truth is that if you have adopted a child then you have taken on the role of parent. It is therefore your duty to discipline an adopted child. If you do not provide discipline where appropriate then the child will not develop into an emotionally healthy and well adjusted adult.

Adoption Issues

Though it is necessary to discipline an adopted child, extra sensitivity is definitely required. Adopted children often have certain issues pertaining to the fact that their mother and father are not their natural parents. Therefore, when they are disciplined they may convince themselves that this would not have taken place if they had been the birth child of their parents.

When you discipline an adopted child you will need to make certain the punishment is fair and appropriate. You should probably avoid harsher punishments such as spanking or yelling. Instead reward positive behavior with treats and punish negative actions by withholding privileges.

There may come a time when your adopted child makes a comment about you not being their real parent when you attempt to discipline them. Such words can be very painful for any parent to hear.

Some parents give into their child when they hear such words. If you are the parent of an adopted child do not let such words make you feel bad and give in. Whenever a parent does not discipline an adopted child that has done something wrong then they do their son or daughter a disservice.
