Essential Prerequisites Of Foster Parenting

You may not be able to bring peace to the world, stop global warming, prevent wars or help society avert natural catastrophes, but by being a great foster parent, you can make a huge difference in the life of a child ...

Foster parenting is not for the weak and it is not for everyone.

While it doesn’t require a PhD or experience in child care, it requires something even more difficult - a very big heart.

If you sign up to be a foster parent, you might already have some idea of what lies in store for you through the movies or experiences you heard from friends and family.

Or you may have lived with foster parents yourself and want to pay forward in some way. However, if you are considering whether you can make the grade in this noble endeavor, read on and find out if you possess some or all of these traits.

Foster Parenting - Patience

Foster parenting requires bucket loads (and then some) of patience and selflessness. This is because children who come to foster parents usually are at the receiving end of some kind of trauma like a divorce, abuse, death of a family member or something to that effect. Even normal, healthy children can be traumatized by such experiences and sometimes do not know who to blame. They often have the victim mindset of why me? And try to find out who they can take their anger and frustration out on.

However, even though it is definitely much easier said than done, putting yourself in their shoes is the way to go. If you have never been in a foster home, you have no idea how painful it can be to be displaced from your home and to be away from your loved ones. At times, the State even splits up sisters and brothers in different foster homes and that can be just awful.

Foster Parenting - A BIG Heart

Foster parenting requires that you have a big heart, not a big home or a big bank account. Kids coming to foster parents need love and attention and while you may think feeding two more mouths means you have to work longer or get a second job, it usually doesn’t need to be that way. Foster parenting can be very rewarding if you spend quality time with these displaced little children and make a positive impact in their lives.

If you make an iota of difference so that their today is better than their yesterday and their tomorrow holds some rays of promise, you have made a difference in this world. You may not be able to bring peace in the whole world, stop global warming, wars or natural catastrophes; but by being a great foster parent, you can make a huge difference in the life of a child.
