Children are always looking forward to the time of the year when they head off towards summer camps. For them, summer camp is an escape from reality and they get to do activities that they do not usually do with their families because of lack of time or lack of resources. They can do horseback riding, camping, hiking, skiing, rowing, archery and a whole lot more, and they can do these activities as much as they want every day of the week in these summer camps.

However, the single most important key to having a great summer camp experience is safety, and is the one thing that should never be forgotten while in these summer camps. All the fun and great experiences one would gain in these camps will be negated if safety rules and practices are not followed, so it would be best to take heed of these safety tips.

Basic Safety Tips for Summer Camps

The following safety tips should be followed while in a summer camp. You can also apply these tips anywhere even outside of a summer camp and while at home.

* Wear a helmet for any hazardous activity while at summer camp. Wearing a helmet while engaged in summer camp activities like riding a scooter or a bike, horseback riding, skateboarding, and any other similar outdoor activities is critical to maintain personal safety. Studies have shown that the simple act of wearing a helmet can reduce the risk for injuries by a considerable amount.

* Summer camps usually involve activities in swimming pools and this is a dangerous place for children if left unattended. These pools should have pool alarms or door alarms to prevent unsupervised entry by children.

* Outdoor grilling is a favorite at summer camps and it is a safety precaution to maintain these grills outside and avoid operating them in an enclosed area. Grills in an indoor location are a fire hazard issue and can cause harmful fumes.

* Playgrounds should have a fall safe area under a swing set, slide or a jungle gym to prevent any nasty falls, which can result to breaks. Trampolines are another area in summer camps that needs added protection with shock absorbing mats. It would also be a good practice to allow only one person at a time.

* Windows are common areas where falls occur, whether in a summer camp or at home. Ensure that windows are equipped with safety latches, particularly those located on higher floors.

Summer camps are filled with fun activities that most children cherish; however, safety should be followed first at all times.
