Parenting can be quite challenging, and daily stresses can become quite exhausting for parents. Children need to be taught the discipline, and all parents want to find a method that really works.
Some Commonly Used Child Discipline Methods
Most of the parents don’t feel comfortable with the disciplinary role. Spanking the child is one of the most commonly used child discipline method. When the child test the limits, many parents get tempted to spank the child, but studies indicate that there are some problems associated with this form of discipline. Spanking may send the message to a child that certain behavior is unacceptable, but in the long run, it conveys that hitting is acceptable.
An effective child discipline method is to give the child time-out, as this will give the child chance to think back and analyze the behavior. It will also send a clear message that certain behavior is unacceptable. Time-outs also give a chance to parents to cool down and adopt a more rational approach. Experts suggest that child should be given time-out equal to the age, such as four minutes for a four year old child and so on.
Talking to the child can be very effective child discipline method, as it opens doors for many alternatives to hitting. Listen to child’s feelings, and acknowledge them. Children are usually not aware of the consequences, and if they are shown that hitting can hurt others, child can learn to empathize. If child is scolded for hitting or misbehaving, child’s focus shifts to your anger rather than the hurt caused. It is however important to let the child know that hitting is unacceptable.
When following various child discipline method, it is important to understand that it requires repetition, patience, time and modeling. Sometimes, it just helps to ignore the misbehavior as many children misbehave only to get attention. Once you have told the child about appropriate behavior, ignore attention seeking behaviors such as foul language, howling, screaming and so on.
Detachment can sometimes be an effective child discipline method, where parents pretend that this is not their child. Most parents are able to stay calm when trying to discipline other’s children.
When trying to discipline a child, be firm and stay alert. It is much easier to deal with the situation before it gets out of hand. Try to correct the mistakes of a child before you lose your cool or get frustrated.
Various child discipline methods are used to raise confident and responsible children, who can lead a useful and disciplined life. The type of discipline used by a family greatly affects the self-esteem of a child.
