Newborn Adoption

Adopting a newborn into your home can be a welcoming and challenging experience.

There are so many things that you want to be able to share with your new little one, and you have the best intentions of making the home you've provided for them safe and comfortable.

But there are some transitional factors that need to be considered before you can adopt a child successfully, and the actual adoption process is one that will actually take a lifetime to complete.

Here are some of the things that you should do--and consider--when it comes to newborn adoption.

First, it is important to understand that your principle concern and responsibility should be to care for the adopted infant in the best way possible. This not only means making sure there is room for the baby in your home, but you should create an environment that will allow the infant to grow and develop at a normal rate.

This may mean having different members of your family care for the baby in order to help him to be well adjusted, or keeping close ties with the birth parents or birth family, so that the child will know just how much he is loved. This, of course, is dependent on the circumstances that surround the adoption.

The birth parents of the child need time in order to make peace with their decision, or to provide the necessary resources for a smooth adoption, so be mindful of this during the process. You may be anxious for the newborn adoption to take place, but it's important to be considerate of the birth family's feelings during this time.

You should speak with them as much as possible to find out if they still want to be in the child's life, and if visitation is ideal for the infant. The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry recommends that the infant adoption process be completed by the time the child is four months old, so you'll need to make sure that you have everything in order to take the child home by that time.

You should be prepared to help your infant adjust to a sleeping schedule, and to form healthy bonds with members of the adopted family. Infant health is also important for a new parent to know about, so be sure to choose a good pediatrician in your area who can help you monitor and improve your baby's health. You'll also need to consider finding child care for your newborn, so interviewing a few day cares and nurseries before bringing your baby home is best.
