The Effects Of Hyperthyroidism On Female Fertility

Hyperthyroidism is counted among the various other causes of infertility. It is held responsible for preventing ovulation or the release of an egg. Even in the deficiency of ovulation, there may be normal menses. So, infertility may be considered as the only symptom of a basic thyroid problem. Thus, it establishes a relationship between hyperthyroidism and infertility.
Hyperthyroidism can take place in women during pregnancy, after pregnancy or it may be one of the causes of infertility in females. Though pregnancy may enlarge the thyroid gland, their functioning remains unaffected. Besides this, women with hyperthyroidism are most likely to give birth to babies with the same disease. Thus, the babies may suffer from both mental and physical development, if not treated at the earliest detection.
Hyperthyroidism affects less than even one percent of all pregnancies. However, if it happens, it tends to have extreme consequences on the mother as well as the fetus. Women suffering from hyperthyroidism may experience changes in their menstrual cycle like irregular menses and absence of ovulation. However, these changes cannot be considered to define infertility in women with mild hyperthyroidism.
But risks involved in the pregnancy of a woman with hyperthyroidism cannot be overlooked. There always remain risks of miscarriage, unplanned abortion, premature delivery and maybe pre-eclampsia. These risks can be reduced if hyperthyroidism is identified at an early stage and treated properly at the right time.
It is not easy to recognize the symptoms of hyperthyroidism from symptoms of normal pregnancy. They both may have common characteristics. For instance, excessive sweating, feeling hot or increased heart beats may be noticed in both normal pregnancy and hyperthyroidism. But there are two symptoms which can be identified only in the case of hyperthyroidism. These symptoms include beating of the heart for more than 100 times in a minute and weight loss. So, it is recommended that any woman who notices these symptoms should get herself tested for hyperthyroidism to avoid pregnancy related problems.
Actually, the link between hyperthyroidism and infertility cannot be ignored. It is so because hyperthyroidism has been linked with increased chances of having formation of cysts on the ovaries that in turn is associated with infertility. It has been evaluated by some researchers that women who get pregnant without treating hyperthyroidism have more chances of giving birth to babies with physical and mental abnormalities.
Even if proper medicine is taken, in that case also there is a risk associate to the normal birth of the baby. It is most probable that thyroid-stimulating medicines may remain in the blood and from there it may pass to the newborn baby. So, it becomes necessary to perform a simple blood test of the baby immediately after birth. In this way, probable hyperthyroidism can be prevented in the baby.
