Step Child Adoption
Once you marry someone with children, or have children of your own when you enter into a marriage, finding out more about step child adoption could be a great option for you and your family. Here a few factors to consider when you're going through the adoption process.
Since this adoption process involves only one adoptive parent and one biological parent, the transition may be a little smoother for both the children and the parents. Depending on the ages of the children, it is best to sit down as a family and talk about some of the changes that will take place, if any, once the adoption is final. Usually the biggest requirement for this is the marriage between the people with children, but you will also need to fill out the adoption forms and paperwork that are required by the state you live in. Be sure to take care of this as soon as possible; while it may be ok for your stepchild to be living with you, you may not have the right to make certain decisions for them, or to protect them legally if you have not officially adopted them.
Step child adoption is also not as much of a hassle for blended families because there are no lawyer fees to pay. You don't have to hire an attorney to bring the case to court for you, and the adoption can take place even if the biological father of the children is missing or does not come forward during the adoption process. There are also ways that you can complete everything involving the adoption online, which will save you time and money, and give you more time to spend adjusting to one another as a family.
As you're talking to your stepchildren about the adoption, or if you're speaking with your own child about being adopted, be sure to do more than just share information with them--listen to their concerns, and be attentive to what they have to say. Find out what scares them about the adoption, and what would make them happy about the process. You may want to have a few conversations with them without the adoptive parent present as well, so that they will feel comfortable sharing their feelings. There are a number of things that come along with step child adoption, such as moving to a new city or state, having to refer to the new person as 'Mom' or 'Dad', and getting along with step siblings, so make sure your child's voice is heard.
