Some Facts About Robitussin Fertility

There are some claims that Robitussin thins the cervical mucus, thus enabling sperm to penetrate the cervix ...
It is very rare to find that couples have difficulty in conceiving due to a cervical mucus problem. Three prominent reasons behind infertility are ovulation problems, sperm problems and problems with the fallopian tubes. But Robitussin is not able to solve any of these problems.
The main ingredient in plain Robitussin is guaifenesin. There are some claims that Robitussin thins the cervical mucus, thus enabling sperm to penetrate the cervix. However, it has not been proved by any authentic study that fertility can be improved by the use of Robitussin. Besides this, studies also have not yet approved the safety level of guaifenesin in pregnancy.
Guaifenesin does not have any effect on Robitussin fertility if it is due to any other cause than cervical mucus. However, it has been reported that the administration of guaifenesin may change the characteristics of cervical mucus and result in improved sperm survival and fertility. But, it must be noted here that robitussin having guaifenesin as a main expectorant, is effective only on those cases where the cause of infertility is believed to be basically associated with the cervical mucus.
The use of guaifenesin cannot improve sperm count in males and also cannot open up closed fallopian tubes in females. So, it is always recommended that, when facing a problem in conceiving, the first priority of the couple trying to achieve conception must be a visit to a specialist to know the exact cause of the infertility.
Even if one has to use Robitussin, then it must be ensured that it is the plain kind i.e. contains only guaifenesin. It is essential because other versions of Robitussin may contain decongestants. So, they may dry up the cervical mucus.
The cause of Robitussin fertility is cervical mucus, which is generally noted by many women while charting their fertility signals. However, a physician diagnoses it only after noticing mucus one or two days before ovulation, which is referred to as a post-coital test.
It is also to be noted that a number of women take Robitussin, which has guaifenesin as its main expectorant while on Clomid (clomiphene citrate, Serophene). Actually, clomid is considered responsible for causing excessive mucus in about more than 30 percent of women who are using it. That is why guaifenesin may prove helpful for that.
The reason behind the usage of guaifenesin for fertility purposes is that it is believed to have properties for thinning cervical mucus. Besides this only purpose, there is no other proven benefit of using guaifenesin, so it cannot be advised for all situations.
Like any other medicine, Robitussin with guaifenesin may have some side effects. These side effects can include diarrhea, hives, headache, nausea, abdominal pain and dizziness.
It must be remembered that all these side effects are not common, so it is important that anyone using guaifenesin for fertility problems should be well informed of all these possibilities, and stay in communication with your doctor.

Fertility Facts & Tips
When it comes to ovulation, men are typically unable to tell when a woman is ovulating. Unlike the animal kingdom, males must rely on the female to let him know when ovulation is occurring so they can have intercourse in order to reproduce. Just before ovulation, the female often notices cervical changes, such as an increase in mucous production. The female also has an increase in body temperature which signals the beginning of the ovulation phase. In some cases, a female might even experience a heightened sense of smell as well as a stronger libido just before ovulation.
