Some Facts About Ovarian Cyst Infertility

By Parenting Editor

In this article we discuss whether there is such a thing as ovarian cyst infertility and look at the development of ovarian cysts in women ...

Ovarian cysts are generally a common swelling either of one or both ovaries. It is usually harmless. Usually these cysts appear in women who are between the time of puberty and menopause. It is the time when ovaries are at the high and driving out mature eggs. The term “functional” in the case of ovarian cyst implies that there is nothing serious to it. It clearly indicates that it is not the result of any hidden disease or disorder. Also, it is most likely that it will disappear or shrink on its own within a time of few weeks.

In certain functional ovarian cysts, there are no symptoms and these can be discovered only after routine pelvic exams. While symptoms in others include:

  • Irregularities in the menstrual cycle
  • Pain during sexual intercourse
  • Nausea or queasiness
  • Breast tenderness

These symptoms should not be overlooked, as they may be cause of some serious health problems. If any change in menstruation happens or there is a prolonged stomach pain, then it is essential to get all these symptoms checked by a physician.

It is common to find ovarian cysts in young women. Besides this, many women who are facing the problem of infertility can also have ovarian cysts. Although there is no such ovarian cyst infertility, it can be based on the fact that most probably endometriomos do not leave any negative impact on egg quality. However, their likeliness to interfere with follicular development and ovulation cannot be denied. This condition occurs when the endometriomas that are sticking to the pelvic sidewall result in interfering with the ovulatory mechanism, which lead to the ovum pick up.

In certain cases that are quite rare, the cyst may get twisted and cut off its own blood supply. This is known as torsion. It may cause extreme stomach pain, vomiting and fever. One needs to get immediate medical help in that case. Also, in some other cases, cysts may burst out and will result in severe lower abdomen pain. Generally, in these kinds of situations, one requires treatment in hospital.

The basic tool that is used for treating an ovarian cyst is an ultrasound scanning. In a case of large cyst, one requires to get abdominal scan done to measure its size. Otherwise, a vaginal ultrasound scan is performed to determine the location and size of a cyst. This process allows assessing of the cyst, and its contents. Cysts can be categorized into three i.e. cystic, solid and complex, according to their appearance in ultrasound scan.

A functional or simple ovarian cyst most probably will not create any problem in conceiving. However, a surgery may be recommended depending on individual cases. It is advised to have a talk with the physician about pregnancy plans, so that you can get advice on what needs to be done.

There is no proof available of ovarian cyst infertility. It must be noted that a woman can be fertile even with one or even with a part of one ovary. It is always best to refer to a fertility specialist to refer on encountering a problem of ovarian cysts. He/she is the best person to advice you as per your individual situation.
