Independent Adoptions

When you're thinking about adopting a child, you may not want to go with a traditional adoption agency in order to complete the process. Independent adoptions are just as accepted and valid as adoptions that are done with an agency and representatives, and if you want to know more about this process, here are some things you'll want to keep in mind.

First of all, independent adoptions are done when the parents who want to adopt contact the birth mother or birth families themselves. The adoptive parents will have to talk to the birth family about the needs of the child, and the timeline that you want to stick to when it comes to adopting the child. If the child is older and living with other birth relatives, you'll want to work closely with the family in order to establish a relationship with the child so that they will feel comfortable with the adoption process as well.

You will also have to hire an attorney to handle the legal processes that come along with independent adoptions. When you're searching for a lawyer, be very careful and very thorough in your research. Make sure that the lawyer has experience with handling family, custody, and adoption issues, and be sure to interview as many lawyers as you need to in order to find a legal professional who is going to be genuinely attentive to your needs, your family's needs, and the needs of the adoptive child and family. It may be best for you to meet with the lawyer you've chosen along with the adoptive family, so that you can work out issues like visitation rights and transitional methods for the adopted child before and during your meetings in court.

While you're conducting your research about independent adoptions, you should also make sure that you are operating in accordance with state laws. All of the states in the U.S. accept independent adoptions, except for Connecticut and Massachusetts, where you must adopt through an agency. However, you should still make sure you are up to date on all the stipulations and requirements for adoption in your area. Violation of these laws could result in serious consequences for you, your family, and perhaps the adopted child, so be careful to stick to regulations.

If you're ready to learn more about independent adoptions, and think that you want to bring a child home to your family, you can check out sites like www.babycenter.org, or www.adoptivefamilies.com. You will learn how to prepare your family and home for a new member, and you may even get to see a list of children who are looking to be adopted, and how to get in touch with their families. Good luck!
