Ovulation is the most fertile time of a woman's menstrual cycle. It refers to the period of time during which the egg is able to be fertilized by the male's sperm. For couples who are trying to conceive, the days surrounding ovulation are an ideal time for intercourse. Ovulation kits are an accurate method for determining when a woman is at her most fertile, but she can also detect bodily changes that can indicate ovulation has occurred.

Ovulation occurs when a female ovary releases an ovum into the fallopian tube. Successful ovulation is necessary in order for people to reproduce. Typically, a woman is at her most fertile time during the few days on either side of her ovulation day. This is because the luteinizing hormone (LH), which is a chemical that triggers the release of an ovum, is at its highest production point. If a couple is trying to achieve conception, intercourse during these few days is important for reproduction purposes.

Male humans usually have no idea when a woman is ovulating unless she tells him. Females who know their own body can often determine when they ovulate through a variety of signals. A woman typically experiences a higher body temperature and an increased libido during the ovulation phase. Women might also notice an increased mucous production in the cervical area during this time. These clues are so subtle that a woman's fertile days are usually a mystery to males even if they are in a relationship.

Couples often choose to utilize ovulation kits as a means to let them know when the woman in the relationship is experiencing ovulation. These kits use a variety of methods to determine the best days for intercourse to achieve or even avoid conception. The saliva ovulation kits are the least messy and the easiest to use, while the urine ovulation kits are more popular but require more work for accurate test results. Whichever method you choose, ovulation kits are based on the principle of female hormonal spikes to determine days of ovulation.
