A Basic Overview Of Lupron Fertility

Lupron can prove helpful in stimulating egg production for an IVF cycle ...
Physicians usually prescribe lupron i.e. leuprolide acetate for the treatment of endometriosis. It is considered capable of lowering the estrogen levels and FSH and LH (lutenizing hormone) production in the body is down regulated. Endometrial tissue relies greatly upon estrogen for growth.
It is also used as a Lupron fertility drug in IVF (invitro fertilization) as per a patient’s particular protocols. Generally, it is given along with a follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). It is a GnRH- agonist, which works against the body’s naturally occurring gonadotropin-releasing hormone. Thus, it proves helpful in stimulating egg production for an IVF cycle.
The type of protocol is decided according to the physical history of patient. Everything including the current type of treatment, physician’s preferences etc. are taken into consideration. Mostly these protocols are either luteal lupron or flare protocols.
Lupron is given several days in advance of the next expected period of patient. Larger doses of lupron are given till the FSH medicine is not included to the protocol and the dose varies. This kind of protocol is considered best to provide women with the best possible number of mature follicles. It, in turn is taken as the best predictor of informing the possibility of success of IVF. For poor responders, the flare protocol is generally used. With the first administration of lupron, there remains initial increase in FSH for number of days, which is followed by suppression. On the second day of period, lupron is administered and FSH is added, taking advantage of this surge in FSH,
Since ovulation cannot take place while on lupron, as the lupron blocks body’s natural FSH and LH, it prevents a premature surge of LH prior to retrieval. Thus, the patient is given a synthetic form of the FSH. It is given to ensure the occurrence of development and maturation of follicle.
Lupron is administered either by intramuscular injection (IM) or by subcutaneous injection. Subcutaneous injection is given once in a day by using insulin syringe. Often, one vial is sufficient for one treatment cycle. Also, the patient is provided with a prescription for insulin syringes. This medicine must be refrigerated.
This medicine is administered on either thigh area or abdomen. Before administering, the area is cleaned with alcohol. Thereafter, using thumb and first finger area is spread and the medicine is injected. The needle is pulled out and gauze is used to rub the area softly.
Like lupron fertility drug, ganirelix acetate and cetrotide acetate also perform function of suppressing FSH and LH production. But here the suppression is more complete than lupron.
Side effects that may occur due to the usage of lupron include headache, irritability, forgetfulness, breast tenderness, vaginal dryness, irritation at injection area and ovarian cyst formation.
However, lupron helps in preparing the ovaries for stimulation in conjunction with other fertility medicines.
