Many of us do not realize this but bullying in schools can be one of the primary reasons why the emotional growth of children slows down. According to studies, bullying in schools create such a barrier in the minds of the children who are abused that the emotional maturity of these children is greatly affected. In most cases, children who have been subjected to bullying in schools for a long time become reclusive and will have difficulty in adjusting to society when they grow up.

According to experts, children who have been subjected to bullying in schools will most likely have troubled social lives when they grow up. The loss of self-confidence and acute anxiety among children who have been continuously bullied and humiliated in school is often difficult to overcome. Therapy may help these children gain back their self-confidence but in many cases, they never really get to fully developed emotionally. Unfortunately, the damage of bullying in school is not easily undone.

How to Prevent Bullying in Schools

Children do not have to endure all the humiliation and abuse in school. Parents and school officials can do a lot of things to prevent bullying in schools. Teachers should be alert to the signs and symptoms of bullying in the classroom and in the school playground. For instance, if a child starts to display an aggressive attitude towards his peers, the teacher should try to call the attention of the child immediately without embarrassing him. Sometimes children behave aggressively if they are disturbed or they feel ‘inadequate’ in some way. Since children spend a lot of time in the school, the teacher should be alert to the signs of emotional disturbances in the children under her care.

In the event where the teacher notices that one of her students is constantly bullying others, the teacher should find out the reason why this child is behaving that way. She should ask for a meeting with the child’s parents and tell them about the problem. She should work closely with the parents to correct the behavior of the child as gently as possible. Note that children do not really respond well to harsh treatment and punishment. In most cases, children who are disturbed will only become rebellious if you try to tell them that what they are doing is wrong. Therefore, handling the issue tactfully is paramount.

Ms. Wells develops a clever class activity to teach the children that everyone is different, but these differences should not be grounds for bullying. Using puppets, the children come to see the good in everyone, no matter how different.
